Le Corbusier Art Pavilion in Zurich

The Le Corbusier Pavillion in Zurich was founded by the patron of the arts Heidi Weber in 1967. The pavilion was designed as a private house with the aim of presenting Le Corbusier’s architectural legacy, a place for art exhibitions, as well as a place for lectures and activities on various topics. It is a small building on the bank of Lake Zurich, – this is the last work of Le Corbusier that he designed in his lifetime, 1887 to 1965, but he did not live to see it completed. The house consists of a steel construction, with metal walls, the connection between the facades is through 20,000 large screws, and his favorite color-scheme was used. Next to the building there is a pond for reflection.

Le Corbusier was a famous Swiss architect who developed the Art Nouveau style of building with reinforced concrete, combined with glass walls. He was nicknamed the “Knight of Concrete”. Villa Savoy was the first villa he built in 1929 and was considered a pioneer in modern architecture. He designed private homes and said “a house is a machine to live in”. 17 of the buildings he designed in 7 countries around the world have been recognized as World Heritage Sites. Le Corbusier fell in love with concrete while working as an apprentice for the French architect Auguste Perret. During his time working in Germany, he met the young architect Mies van der Rohe and was influenced by him.

Le Corbusier dictated a new pattern in construction: the use of reinforced concrete, which was only invented at the end of the 19th century, a building on pillars so that below them there is an invaded first floor with flowing air. The skeleton of the building is placed on pillars that create a geometric internal division – the pillars are what hold the building up, not the walls. The windows are large in order to bring in light and air and a sense of movement inside the building. An interior space completely free in terms of planning – the residents determine the location of the interior walls. A flat roof intended for an entertainment and hospitality area for residents with a small garden or wading pool.

Le Corbusier was a man of many disciplines: he also designed furniture, painted, sculpted, and wrote books.
